I have to say that I’m feeling quite optimistic and energized these days. I did something out of the ordinary, and “they do say” that making a change is like taking a vacation…
During the past 6 months, my husband Darren and I had been working too hard and had experienced several difficult family situations. With all of the challenges we faced, we felt like there was never enough time to invest in our relationship, or to exercise and stay in shape for our health’s sake. As a result, we were both feeling stressed and exhausted.
We realized that our lives needed a bit of spring cleaning.
We both knew we had the power to change our state, yet the limiting messages that played in our heads kept us firmly stuck in our rut. The sabotaging voices – “You don’t have the time to take a break or the resources. You had better be responsible. How on earth will you make this happen?” – were a constant companion that we were allowing to dictate our lives.
When you run demanding businesses that you are solely responsible for, you have to be in charge. No one else can do the work for you. Sometimes, you just know at a deeper level that you need to rest, but your mind insists that you don’t have the time to take a break. This is exactly the time that you need it most.
WHEN YOU SAY YOU CAN’T – YOU CAN’T!
WHEN YOU SAY YOU CAN – YOU CAN!
As Darren and I began to evaluate our lives, we realized that we couldn’t afford to keep sacrificing our health and wellbeing for our work. This is when we made the decision to explore the option that we could take some time off. This single thought seemed to ignite our passion and got the ball rolling.
We decided to take a leap of faith and visit Palm Desert, CA, a place that we frequent and love. Acting on what our hearts knew we needed to do wasn’t easy, with all the guilt racing around in our heads about being responsible (which by the way is never the issue). So before we could change our minds, we paid our deposit, booked our flights, and thus were committed.
Grinding it out
The weeks leading up to going away were crazy busy. Many times we wondered, “What on earth were we thinking? How are we going to get things in place so we can manage our businesses efficiently while away?” Yikes!
Sometimes balance means working really hard for a season so you can achieve what your heart desires. There comes a time when you just need to “grind it out” – a phrase my father-in-law uses when you commit to something 100% and need to work your ass off to make your dream happen.
Doing the things that you have to do, so that one day you can do the things that you want to do, isn’t always easy. The key at these times is to remember to check in and know yourself – know what you need and how to find that oasis – so you don’t burn out.
Darren and I worked diligently for many hours and practiced discipline to make our trip happen. What an incredible gift this was and we are so proud that we took our happiness seriously!
Collecting the rewards
The time away was everything and more that I could have imagined. Since we were intentional about what we wanted from our vacation – balance, health, connection, rejuvenation and rest – our tanks were filled with what we needed most. We both came home rested, connected, fit (do you believe it – on vacation?) and ready to be on top of our game!
Did my business suffer? Hardly, thanks to technology I was able to work with my clients quite well. I even had several new clients contact me and begin the coaching process. Hmmm – I do believe there is a message here!
The time away has given me a fresh perspective, both personally and professionally. My relationship with Darren has deepened because we took time to get to know and appreciate each other in a new way. I am also totally committed to staying fit and healthy and I have a plan. Spring has truly come!
Yes you CAN!
It is amazing how your world begins to change when you take your wellbeing seriously and do what it takes to have what you really want. My greatest learning from this experience is that when I say, “YES I CAN!” and move past my limited beliefs, this is when I open my heart and mind to making anything happen.
It may not be realistic for you to take an extended period of time off like I did, and this is not what I am suggesting. Just being aware of your dreams and recognizing how your thoughts empower you is powerful. Ask yourself the following questions:
Has it been a while since you did something out of the ordinary and did something that you were passionate about, that challenged your limited beliefs and moved you outside of your comfort zone?
When was the last time you decided to try something new or different?
Do you feel stagnant in an area of your life?
Do you feel like there has to be more to this life than what you are experiencing?
If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above, then it’s probably time to make a change. Consider one step you can take to “refresh” your life, then talk to someone you trust about this.
TAKE AN “ENERGY BREAK”
If you only have a few minutes:
Keep a photo handy that makes you smile. What do you love and want in your life?
This might be a picture of a destination spot you wish to visit or a picture of someone special or something that inspires you. Dare to dream!
After a hard day’s work – Ask yourself, “What do I need most?”
No energy? Go for a brisk walk, notice nature and allow what you notice speak to you. A breath of fresh air is life within itself!
Are you exhausted but still have work to get done? Turn off the outside noise and get some rest. Tomorrow is another day and when you’re tired, you really aren’t that productive. A good night’s rest will give you perspective and strength, so go catch up on your sleep!
Feeling stressed? Talk to someone who cares. When you share your heart, you are never alone.
Shake it up this weekend
Consider changing your routine this weekend. The same routine 24-7 will always feel like a rut. There is a quote that asks, “What is the difference between a rut and a grave?”
The answer: “The length of the walls.” Ugh!
Take the time to turn things off and do something different this weekend. A break from your regular routine and “the same old” is most refreshing.
Create a monthly plan
Plan to take a weekend to do something you really love and that rejuvenates you, then mark it on your calendar as an event. This can be as extravagant as a weekend away or as simple as being a tourist in your own city. Get creative – stir up that passion, stop the boredom – and think of something, ANYTHING to get you out of your rut.
Doing this one thing and committing to it every month will keep you incredibly motivated because you’ll have something to look forward to. How exciting is that?
Take a vacation as often as you wish
A vacation doesn’t have to be an extravagant trip that costs you thousands of dollars – it just has to be a time to get away to do what you enjoy and a place where you have the time and space to rejuvenate.
Dream and plan to do something that your heart desires. Make a bucket list of ideas of what you would love to do. Giving yourself permission to dream is rejuvenating within itself.
Are you up for the challenge?
Can I challenge you to find some time to be refreshed – to think of your life positively and make your life a priority? Make it a plan to enjoy your life rather than take it for granted. Your life will then be extraordinary!
